Economic Impact of Lake in the Hills Airport (3CK)An update to the 2012 study released by Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) through its Division of Aeronautics began in March of 2020. Please visit the Illinois Aviation website to track overall progress. According to the last study, Lake in the Hills Airport was responsible for a total economic output of $29.4 million. A similar study published by IDOT in March 2000 showed a total economic impact of $19.2 million.

It should be no surprise that airports in Illinois, including the 3CK airport, are an important stimulus for our economy. Numerous travelers that travel to Illinois do so by air. In addition, many smaller businesses rely on aviation to meet their transportation needs.

The Lake in the Hills Airport is designated by the Federal Aviation Administration as a reliever to Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport. It is the only public airport serving McHenry County. Services available at the airport include a Fixed Based Operator that provides both full and self-service fuel, two flight schools that have received national recognition, and aircraft maintenance repair facilities with a reputation that draws in pilots from around the region for aircraft repairs. A small viewing/eating area provides a place for families to enjoy a picnic while they watch aircraft take off and land.
