Drone Compliance

Drone sign 2024

It is important to first note the deployment of drones is governed by strict laws and guidelines to protect citizens' privacy and ensure transparency in their use. The Lake in the Hills Police Department is committed to the protection of our community and operating drones within the all laws and statutes.  These are in place to provide the benefits of drone technology while balancing and protecting the rights of individuals.

Any use of the drone will be in compliance to all relevant statutes of the State of Illinois, specifically the Freedom from Drone Surveillance Act 725 ILCS 167/, department standard order of operations, federal law, and Federal Aviation Administration and 14 CFR 107 requirements.

Why use drones?

Drones offer a range of capabilities that enhance the effectiveness, efficiency, and safety of police operations such as providing real-time aerial views of ongoing situations, allowing officers to assess situations from a safe distance. This technology can be crucial during large gatherings, search and rescue operations, or when responding to natural disasters, ensuring that officers have the most accurate information possible before making critical decisions.

Drones can be deployed in potentially dangerous situations, such as active crime scenes or hazardous environments, reducing the need for officers to place themselves in harm's way. By providing intelligence from the air, drones help ensure that both officers and civilians remain safer during complex operations.

Thermal imaging and high-definition cameras can locate missing persons more quickly and efficiently, especially in challenging terrains or at night. This technology has proven invaluable in saving lives and reducing the time required to conduct thorough searches.

Drones can document crime scenes from multiple angles, providing detailed imagery and data that can be used for investigations and court cases. This level of precision aids in preserving the integrity of the crime scene and ensures that evidence is captured accurately.

The Lake in the Hills Police Department strives to provide our community with outstanding police service.  Providing officers access to modern technology and staying current on advancements in methods of community protection, crime scene processing, finding missing loved ones, and more is just one of many ways the department is able to meet and exceed the community's expectations.
