The Village of Lake in the Hills Public Works Department will be conducting semi-annual hydrant flushing starting Monday, April 13, 2020. The hydrant flushing will occur in all areas west of Randall Road from April 13 through April 17 and in all areas east of Randall Road from April 20 through April 24.
The hydrant flushing program is a systematic procedure that directs water flow from the water treatment plants and towers, out to the very ends of the water distribution system. Through this process, any sediment that has collected on the bottom of water main pipes due to iron and manganese deposits or calcium buildup is flushed from the system improving the quality of the water you receive.
Notification signs will be placed throughout each scheduled flushing section at least 12 hours prior and will remain until flushing is complete for that area. Barring any unforeseen challenges, the Village does not expect to conduct hydrant flushing on weekends or after 6pm on weekdays during this time.
When the sediment in the water mains becomes stirred up during the flushing process it can cause temporary discoloration in your water. During this time, simply run your tap for one to two minutes and the discoloration will clear up. For this reason, the Village also cautions residents to avoid doing laundry when hydrant flushing is being performed in the immediate area to prevent staining. Contact the Public Works Department at 847-960-7500 for any questions you may have about the upcoming hydrant flushing.
